English and ASD at P level 8

Level 8 requires more social interaction which children with Asperger’s syndrome and sensory processing disorder may find very difficult.

You can:

  • Have a ‘talking’ object – a soft toy or ball. Get a small group of children to sit in a circle. The child with the object may speak; to tell news or talk about a subject, and others must listen. The talking object is passed on to the next child in the group.
  • Try using inferential reasoning material, such as the book Think It – Say It by Luanne Martin, published by Pro-Ed and marketed by Winslow in UK. (Inferential reasoning is about making connections and drawing conclusions given some information: for example in a drawing there is a child drinking from a glass, the sun is visible, the child is wearing summer clothes so it would be reasonable to infer that the child is thirsty.) This book is designed to help with reasoning and organisational skills. The individual pictures tell a story and the child, through answering questions, can work out what has happened. They can also think about what might happen next.
