To combine two ideas, concepts or words (for example ‘more drink’). Have a vocabulary of over 50 words. May attempt to clarify meaning, for example, add facial expression or change tone of voice, but not change words used.

To respond appropriately to familiar or immediate events for example ‘Where is the ball?’ Follow instructions containing at least two key words, signs or symbols for example "Give the book to Johnny."

To select a few words, symbols or pictures with which familiar, derive some meaning from text, symbols or pictures presented in a familiar way. To match pictures and symbols to objects and make choices between two symbols or pictures for example to select a drink. To show curiosity about content at a simple level – for example may answer basic two key-word questions about a story.

To produce meaningful marks and symbols associated with their own name or familiar spoken words, actions, images and events. To trace, over-write or copy shapes and straight line patterns.
