English and children with physical impairment P level 6-8
Each of these P levels requires increased social skills for which the child will need support.
The child can use whatever method best suits them in order to write or copy symbols.
You can:
Make sure the child is comfortable with the group of children they will be working with and that the other children respect them and understand how their physical impairment may impact on communication. Ensure the child can see everyone in the group.
When writing or recording make sure the child has access to the medium they prefer. This may be:
- Written – with or without a pencil grip and a specially adapted work-station.
- The word-processor function of a computer (with or without a large-key keyboard)
- A freer-type program such as Paint.
- Programs which will convert handwriting into text might also be worth exploring - make sure the child can see the screen – does it need to be on a stand or flexi-arm?
- Using the interactive whiteboard, with the keyboard function displayed, may also be helpful.
