Literacy: ASD at P level 7

Autism spectrum disorders

At P level 7 there are greater expectations of increased vocabulary, understanding of books and texts and recognition of individual letters in the child’s name.

Social communication skills and a lack of flexibility may create problems in interacting with others.

 You can:

  • Use games with instructions such as Simon Says, making them gradually more complicated (Simon Says put your hand on your head and stamp your foot).
  • Use new technology such as The Skoog www.skoogmusic.com to record words from a sentence which the pupil can put into the right order by touching the tactile sides of the cube, in the right order.
  • Use action songs where the child is encouraged to supply the next action, or fill in the missing words.
  • Use templates for tracing over shapes, grouped as if words. (Read Write from the start –The Teodorescu Perceptuo-Motor Programme published by LDA) with clear, logical information about supporting the development of fine motor and writing skills.
  • Use magnetic or foam alphabet letters. Make learning letters into a game of hide and seek, I spy, or Pelmanism (pairs game).
