English at KS2
The National Curriculum for English is statutory in all maintained, mainstream schools up to and including key stage 4. An appropriate version of the curriculum is used in maintained special schools. Key Stage 2 (KS2) covers years 3-6, children aged 8-11 years.
At KS2, children work in the following areas of knowledge, skills and understanding:
- In speaking: pupils should speak with confidence in a range of contexts, adapting their speech for different purposes and audiences
- In listening: pupils should listen to, understand and respond appropriately to others
Speaking and listening includes:
- Group discussion and interaction for which children should talk effectively as members of a group
- Drama for which children should be able to participate in a wide range of activities and evaluate their own and others’ contributions
Children should be able to use standard English and be aware of how language varies in context, in regional forms and the difference between written and spoken language.
Reading
Pupils should:
- Read with fluency, accuracy and understanding
- Understand texts through inference and deduction, looking for meaning beyond the literal
- Read for information; develop understanding and appreciation of literary texts
- Develop an understanding of non-fiction and non-literary texts
- Be able to identify and comment on language structure and variation
Writing
Pupils will use knowledge and skills in:
- Composition
- Planning and drafting
- Punctuation
- Spelling
- Handwriting and presentation
- Standard English
- Language structure
