English at KS2 and hearing impairment

The National Curriculum for English is statutory in all maintained, mainstream schools up to and including key stage 4. An appropriate version of the curriculum is used in maintained special schools. Key Stage 1 (KS1) covers years 1-2, children aged 5-7 years.

As the child’s level of reading ability improves, there are more options for reinforcing learning and following instructions.

Ensure that visual clues are available, and consider giving hand-outs with a summary of essential facts and key vocabulary (useful for dyslexic and Asperger’s pupils too). Continue to support social interaction and maintain a good classroom environment (not too noisy with good visibility).
