Mathematics and visual impairment at P level 7
The new requirements for this P level are distinguishing differences and similarities. There is more range in counting and the concept of the written numeral is introduced, which is an additional challenge. Continue to develop the methods from P level 6 to distinguish objects that do not fit into a set.
You can:
- Help the child understand how many? by counting singly. Make sure the child understands that the total number refers to the whole set of counted objects.
- The concept of less is potentially confusing because it’s hard to demonstrate more or less in a tactile way without involving other concepts such as heavier or lighter. Try using similar bowls with water at different depths. Let the child put their hand into the bowl and work out how far up their hand the water comes.
- The concept of add one will be most easily understood with small numbers, so feeling them is manageable.
