PE at KS3 and physical impairment

The National Curriculum for Physical Education is statutory in all maintained, mainstream schools up to and including key stage 4. An appropriate version of the curriculum is used in maintained special schools.  Key Stage 3 (KS3) covers years 7-9, children aged 12-14 years.

There are specific expectations at KS3, so establish the pupil’s strengths and focus on them. This tends to be easier in a secondary school where there is more varied equipment such as trampolines, treadmills and rowing machines.

As with KS1 look to the Paralympics for inspiration on sports the whole class can do. Start with what the pupil can do and build a programme for them in which they can develop and achieve.

Read in conjunction with the main challenges for physically impaired children across subject areas, and some suggestions to help them.
