PE and autism spectrum disorder at P level 7

Autism spectrum disorders

At P Level 7 there are increased expectations on developing control and working collaboratively.

Pupils are expected to express themselves through movement. For many children with Asperger’s syndrome their gross motor control lags behind their maturity and they can become increasingly aware of difficulties in using equipment or controlling their bodies in basic skills. If a pupil becomes aware of this gap in their performance, compared with other pupils, PE can become very stressful for them and work will need to be done on self-image and self-expression.

A pupil with Asperger’s syndrome may find it difficult to understand their own basic emotions, which is often linked to challenging behaviour. They may also find it difficult to express different moods through movement.

You can:

  • Work on expressing basic moods, with support from visual cues
  • Help with self-image through lots of encouragement and by playing games at playtime where the pupil can achieve things
  • Develop turn-taking skills, using social stories to help the pupil understand how others may feel if they don’t take turns
  • Continue to plan ahead for group or partner work
