PE and physical impairment at P level 6

The need to work collaboratively at this P level will require support.

You can:

  • Plan ahead and select volunteers to work with the physically impaired pupil. Set the volunteer clear targets for both children.
  • Use technology such as Soundbeam (a device that turns body movement into sound) or a Theremin (an electronic musical instrument played without physical contact see). These enable children to hear the difference as they move, whether fast or slow, forwards or backwards.
  • The Skoog is a touch-sensitive cube that can be set to different response levels and will create sounds or music on touch (it links to a PC). This can help the pupil establish cause and effect and develop their sense of touch.
  • Activities to try include Raboulle (which is bowling from wheelchair level) Boccia, table cricket and floor hockey (including Zone Hockey).
  • Substitute the requirement to kick a ball with rolling or pushing.
  • Some profoundly disabled students are able to use trikes, walking frames and hydrotherapy - count these activities towards their achievements in PE.
