PE at KS2 and communication difficulties and dyslexia
The National Curriculum for Physical Education is statutory in all maintained, mainstream schools up to and including key stage 4. An appropriate version of the curriculum is used in maintained special schools. Key Stage 2 (KS2) covers years 3-6, children aged 8-11 years.
Communication difficulties
Pupils can only achieve if they know what is expected because they have understood instructions. They will struggle to give self or peer evaluation.
Communication must be clear, simple and supported by whatever communication and visual aids the pupil needs. Plan in advance and have communication resources ready, as appropriate to the pupil: this may includes PECS symbols, photographs, signing or ensuring that any communication devices are pre-programmed ready. Give the pupil time to process and respond to instructions and questions.
Make sure their success is not dependent on understanding complicated objectives.
Dyslexia
KS2 sees an increased need for discussions. Difficulties with memory, terminology and instructions can have an impact on this. Make instructions as visual as possible, and support pupil self-evaluation by preparing them with appropriate vocabulary.
Read in conjunction with the main challenges for children with communication difficulties and dyslexia across subject areas, and some suggestions to help them.
