PE at KS2 and physical impairment

The National Curriculum for Physical Education is statutory in all maintained, mainstream schools up to and including key stage 4. An appropriate version of the curriculum is used in maintained special schools. Key Stage 2 (KS2) covers years 3-6, children aged 8-11 years.

More is expected at this key stage, both of skills and self-evaluation and it becomes harder to enable a physically impaired pupil to really achieve without specialist input and an individual programme.

In addition to the suggestions for KS1, you can:

  • Look at the PE curriculum holistically – identify the skills and knowledge that is needed then, working with the pupil and physiotherapist, agree an individual programme to ensure health, fitness and fun.  Develop a programme of sport based on what the child is able to do, and set targets that reflect their potential to achieve
  • Take specialist advice; visit the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) website
  • Develop tactics and strategies in games that can allow pupils to maximise their potential
  • Encourage the pupil to evaluate their own performance and establish how they can improve
  • Work with what interests the pupil most – it’s more likely to motivate them.
  • Develop the social skills that are usually addressed through teamwork in other areas of the curriculum
