PE and a visual impairment at P level 6

Cooperative working and increased use of equipment create challenges at this level.

You can:

  • Build confidence in movement at different speeds in a secure place, perhaps through dancing to music with a fast and slow tempo. Use gym mats as a tactile guide that the pupil is in a safe area. Encourage them to explore the whole area; get them to pace out how big it is so they know how much space they have. Keep the space consistent so they can build confidence within it.
  • Use consistent moves, built up slowly, so the pupil can learn where they are in relation to others. Encourage them to use other senses to establish what is happening such as feeling the vibration of the floor, hearing someone nearby or feeling the air as someone moves past them. Use verbal clues if this helps.
  • Introduce new apparatus ahead of the lesson so the pupil is prepared. Let them climb over it, feel it all over and get a sense of what they can do on it. Give it a clear name (eg small horse) so the pupil can anticipate what it will be like next time they use it.
