PE: visual impairment at P level 7

Working in pairs and small groups is challenging at this P level. Developing sequences of movements will need support.

You can:

  • Plan ahead so the class or group understands how to offer support; by giving verbal cues and being quiet so pupil can hear and sense what is happening.
  • Support the development of the pupil sequencing movements through verbal cues and consistent terminology.
  • Ensure the pupil is aware of their space for working: aim to support this concept through helping them to pace across the area/mat: for example help the pupil to work out how many strides they do before they reach the other side, and make sure the area is clear from other pupils in the group of class, so the VI pupil can work in confidence.
  • Use a target that will make a sound hit, for the pupil to aim at – such as a wooden board which will resonate when hit by a ball. Make sure the pupil can pace out how far this is away from them, and approximately how large the target is. This will help the VI pupil develop more accuracy with throwing.
