Autism spectrum disorders

The increased expectation to work in groups at P level 6 will be challenging to a child with Asperger’s syndrome. New concepts and new equipment will need to be introduced in a supportive way.

You can:

  • Continue planning ahead, preparing for new concepts and activities and establishing which children will work together
  • Adapt equipment if a pupil struggles – use a larger or softer ball, or a bigger target area
  • Allow time to explore new equipment
  • Respect any concerns about safety – do not insist they have a go
  • Modify a task if you need to – the pupil could crawl across equipment instead of walking if that makes them feel safer
