PE and autism spectrum disorder at P level 5

P level 5 requires skills in remembering and following instructions, which is difficult for many children with Asperger’s syndrome. They will spend time thinking about what you mean, and may appear non-compliant.
Working with others may be challenging because of personal space issues and their understanding of turn-taking.
Concepts such as big or small may be meaningless, so understanding instructions based on them may cause stress
You can:
- Give very clear directions, particularly if sequences of movement are involved. Use demonstration, support, diagrams and lots of encouragement, and have an alternative task ready if the sequence is too challenging
- Plan ahead when working with partners or in groups. Ask the pupils if they will work together and make sure they are happy and know what they’ll be doing. Have a fall-back plan in case of absence
- Anticipate problems with noise or equipment, talking them through with the pupil, and using visual cues to aid understanding
- Plan head if new concepts and vocabulary are being introduced
