PSHE at KS2 and visual impairment
The challenges and suggestions are the same at this level as for KS1. Be aware that the necessity to enlarge resources can become embarrassing to pupils as they get older.
You can:
- Use resources that are the same for everyone but, where possible, are large enough for the visually impaired pupil to see.
- Try buddying with another pupil who is willing to provide support. The other pupil may need some input as to how they can best help.
- Use drama to act out scenarios in which the pupils need support, for example a student being intolerant of another pupil’s needs, and how that makes the other pupil feel. Try a ‘freeze-frame’ technique where after a snatch of conversation you stop the action and ask the rest of the class how particular characters in the drama are feeling. Encourage the pupils to speak out clearly.
