PSHE at KS2 and hearing impairment
The challenges and suggestions are the same at this level as for KS1. As the pupil moves through the key stages more written resources are used. Allow extra time for this. The pupil can’t look at worksheets at the same time as lip-reading, or gauging context from facial expression.
You can:
- Use drama to explore situations between pupils, and by acting out scenarios it encourages pupils to speak out more clearly. Try the ‘freeze-frame’ technique, by stopping the drama after conversation snatches, and repeat the gist of what has been said before asking pupils what the characters are feeling and thinking at that point. By repeating in a clear voice it clarifies what has been said and helps pupils with hearing impairment or communication difficulties.
- Use illustrative resources, either paper copies or interactive whiteboard resources. Ensure the sound quality of any audio output is clear.
