PSHE at KS3 and hearing impairment
The challenges remain the same as at KS1 but with additional issues associated with a large school; noise levels in the corridors, hearing bells for the end of lunch, for example and making friends.
The pupil will need support with note-taking, writing down homework tasks and keeping up with spoken content in lessons.
Give hand-outs for homework tasks, and notes from lessons. It is really important the teacher and other pupils speak clearly as there may be more general background noise to filter out.
If using drama as a vehicle for delivering the PSHE messages, make sure that pupils speak clearly and that the acoustics in the room, or hall, are clear without being resonant. The dramatic characters may need to face the front in order to help the pupil. Subtly ask the pupil if they are able to hear clearly. Look at the provision of an induction loop system, if appropriate.
