PSHE: autism spectrum disorder at P level 6

Autism spectrum disorders

At P level 6 there is the need to respond to others and to show more awareness of how their actions affects others. This is very challenging for the pupil with Asperger’s syndrome, who is wrapped up in their own needs and will not automatically be interested in knowing they affects others.

You can

  • Try turn-taking games and a talking object.
  • Work on cause and effect, making links with science, especially if the pupil’s behaviour is challenging, such as throwing things when cross or frustrated. Reinforce the behaviour you want to develop through social stories and modelling.
  • Have very clear and consistent boundaries, referring to the pupil’s behaviour support plan or individual education plan where relevant.
