Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL)

The pupil with dyslexia may find the terminology of Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) resources, printed by the Department for Education difficult to remember, so reinforce these terms by prominently displaying the SEAL resources in the classroom, and refer to them in context.

Key points

Make sure that the key message of the PSHE lesson is clear and is referred to in the plenary of the lesson, or the summing up. The dyslexic pupil may struggle to cope with more than one key point, especially if the content is in several parts. It may help to have a noticeboard for PSHE and include a ‘what we have learnt/are learning this week’ section.

PSHE strategies are only effective if the whole class is working together on the same themes. It is effective to reinforce key points in the context of other curriculum subjects, so they become embedded.
