PSHE at KS2 and communication difficulties

The challenges at KS2 for children with communication difficulties are in the areas of group discussion, interaction and understanding abstract concepts.
You can:
- Support group discussion by planning in advance, ensuring that vocabulary is familiar for the pupil. Support understanding of more abstract concepts through practical activities that demonstrate their meaning. Relate the concepts to the pupil’s own experiences.
- In group work help others communicate with the pupil, whose responses can be supported by adult intervention. If the pupil’s response is limited by their vocabulary, support the others in the group to plan questions that can be answered with a yes/no response, or a short sentence that is clear.
- Follow the pupil’s speech and language therapy programme and aim to incorporate targets within the classroom.
