PSHE at KS3 and communication difficulties

The challenges at KS3 are around group discussion, interaction and understanding the more abstract concepts. Read the advice for KS2 which applies at this level too.

Try focusing on PSHE which sees the pupil not the disability; using drama in a carefully prepared way can be effective at getting empathy and equality messages across. The pupil who has profound communication difficulties may struggle to understand the more abstract concepts of PSHE, and may find it difficult to relate to the economic and career aspects of PSHEE (the two ‘E’s standing for economic education.) in the same way that their peers will do.

Ensure the pupil has their augmentative means of communication pre-programmed if required, and is supported in using it.
