Science at KS2 and visual impairment

Visual impairmentThe additional challenges for KS2 involve the way material is recorded – use of charts and diagrams, the emphasis on mental methods and measuring

Read the suggestions for visually impaired children and numeracy at KS1 as these can be applied to science

You can:

  • Ensure the practical work is done in a well-lit area and that the VI pupil has the support of a willing work-partner as well as an adult. Agree in advance a fair distribution of tasks and input. Support the VI pupil in recording results, either through a voice recorder (preferably digital so it can be saved onto a computer) to describe the results or entering into a computer or scribing them
  • Make the equipment as colourful as possible for example using coloured water rather than plain water or attaching florescent stickers to key parts of the equipment so the pupil can readily locate them
