Science and autism spectrum disorder at P level 8

Autism spectrum disorders

P Level 8 requires a greater understanding and observation of properties and events, patterns and comparisons. The pupil will need to have more input into evaluating and recording their findings. But science should be seen as fun and, at this level, essentially a practical subject.

Also read about the main challenges for children with autism and Asperger’s syndrome across subject areas and suggestions for inclusion.

You can:

  • Channel the pupil into a scientific way of thinking, asking key questions that enable them to pose questions themselves.
  • Consider safety implications for pupils with sensory processing disorder and motor control problems, for themselves and the things they’re working with (vulnerable animals or fragile equipment). Factor these safety implications into the chosen activities.
  • Use a pictorial representation (symbols, cartoons or photographs) of what pupils with Asperger’s syndrome need to do, in the correct order. It may help them to focus on being less impulsive and more considered.
  • Use the same worksheet for recording results, with support.
