Science and communication difficulties at P level 8

Communication

There will be new vocabulary; words such as chrysalis, butterfly and tadpole. Identifying materials will involve specific language, and there will be further challenges in feeding back observations.

Read the section on communication difficulties that applies across subject areas and levels for an explanation of the main issues and strategies to use in each case.

You can:

  • Use the suggestions and techniques from the other P levels around vocabulary and recording.
  • When sorting materials, the pupil may find it difficult to link properties to materials; help them understand with practical work and by showing DVDs - see Science Bob.
  • For observation, use model questions that lead the pupil through a process, asking ‘What did you do?’ ‘What did you see/hear happen?’
