Science and communication difficulties at P level 4

Read the section on communication difficulties that applies across subject areas and levels for an explanation of the main issues and strategies to use in each case.
In science children with communications difficulties may struggle to understand concepts because of their language acquisition problems. Be patient and model language that is required, such as questions that can develop understanding (for example ‘Does the ice change when we bring it into the classroom?’ encouraging them to respond with a yes/no response, or gestures and facial expression. Reinforce the pupils response with ‘Yes, it changes, it melts and becomes water again’
Ensure all key vocabulary is spoken clearly and in context, and is made relevant. For example ice melting can be related to ice in drinks on a hot day, or ice cream melting in a bowl in a warm room or on a hot day
