The vocabulary around features of living things may need support as will observing changes in sequence, and sorting materials. The child may have problems articulating polysyllabic words such as electricity.

Also read the information on the challenges faced by children with dyslexia across the curriculum and at all levels, plus the suggestions for inclusion.

You can:

  • Introduce the vocabulary of different features in a relevant way: don’t assume prior knowledge of everyday vocabulary as the dyslexic pupil might recognise a particular word but not have made the connection with the correct meaning. They will be prone to using another similar-sounding word incorrectly.
  • Help with strategies for sorting – how to separate groups and what to do. Show them a model example first.
  • Use visual props to help them observe changes and put these in context with plenty of examples.
  • Offer support for organisational tasks. Place objects sequentially for the child. This will help them learn to do it themselves.
