Science and visual impairment at P level 4

Visual impairmentThe impact of a visual impairment on learning will be much the same throughout the P levels. Begin by reading about the main challenges for visually impaired children across subject areas and suggestions for inclusion.

 In addition you can:

  • Use colour-coding for storage of equipment, along with photographs or symbols clearly displayed (for the pupil with some vision).
  • Use additional lamps and magnifying lenses in the work area.
  • Use tactile methods to explore physical outcomes. Let the pupil investigate by putting their hands in water or flour and smelling it.
  • Repeat activities so the pupil can experience different elements. For example, let them push a car, then feel or hear it stop.
  • Back up scientific vocabulary with tactile examples so the pupil can make generalisations. Use words that describe what it feels like rather than what it looks like.
