Science at KS1 and communication difficulties

The challenge at KS1 is that science concepts are largely language-based, so it’s hard for a child with limited speech to grasp them and to show their understanding.

You can:

• Read the suggestions for children with communications difficulties and numeracy at KS1 as these can be applied to science.
• Use model questions to develop their scientific enquiry.
• Use scaffold worksheets (which provide a framework for the pupil’s responses) so they have prompts on a sheet, with visual clues.
