Science at KS2 and communication difficulties

Difficulties at this stage are similar to KS1 but more challenging because of the terminology and vocabulary to be learnt and the increased breadth of topics.
There are two issues for communication difficulties and scientific thinking at KS2: the child’s ability to understand largely language-based concepts and the issues with assessment of them.
As for KS1, use as practical an approach as possible, use simple and consistent language and make sure the child is given every support in being understood.
Establish scientific thinking with carefully structured questions which determine if a pupil can anticipate what might happen; communicate what did happen and compare this to other situations. With careful questioning this level of thinking can be established with minimal communication from the pupil.
