The issues will be similar to those for KS1 and KS2 – but more challenging as language becomes more focused on scientific vocabulary.

Read the suggestions for children with communication difficulties and numeracy at KS3 as these can be applied to science.

Enable the pupil to focus on the practical and visual aspects to develop their concepts: make sure that new concepts are introduced in context and logically, with key vocabulary clearly and consistently used. Try to give different examples so that there is more likely to be a link with a pupil’s experience.

Look out for misunderstandings, and check that the pupil knows what they are doing, and why, for practical activities.
