Science at KS3 and physical impairment
The challenges at KS3 are similar to those of KS1 and KS2; those of accessing resources, collaborative working and recording work
You can:
- Use assistive technology for pupils with severe physical impairments to access and record their work. For less severe physical impairments make sure the pupil has the space and equipment they need, and is able to take a time-out rest when physically tired
- Buddying can work very well, if sensitively done and well supported
- As pupils move through the key stages, science becomes more mathematical, which may make the subject easier for pupils who have difficulty accessing practical activities. However the practical work is important and needs planning ahead so the physically disabled pupil can be fully involved. Just watching something happen is not as memorable as being involved, so try to give the pupil a role in every practical activity
