Thanks to you, Ella can talk to her mum
But things used to be so different.
There were no problems throughout Kim’s pregnancy, it was during labour that things went wrong. Her daughter Ella was starved of oxygen and as a result was left paralysed.
“I knew nothing about disability at all. I had no idea where to go for help. I didn’t know how Ella would develop. I was absolutely terrified... Cerebral palsy didn't mean anything to me at the time. It was just a word, a label.”
Kim put all of her energy in to helping Ella learn to use her body, but when Ella reached the age of two and still couldn't speak, the shock of not being able to communicate with her daughter had a huge affect on Kim.
“Suddenly, I realised that the best way of me getting to know my daughter did not exist. I didn’t how she was feeling or what she needed as she couldn’t tell me. I was devastated.”
Thanks to your support, Ella can speak up for the first time.
The new Eye Gaze system, at Scope’s Ingfield Manor School, has provided Ella with the help she needs to communicate.
Through the eye-controlled communication device, Ella has finally been able to make herself heard!
“I was excited because I could see how much Ella enjoyed it. Her little face would light up when she clicked on the right symbol.
At Scope’s Ingfield Manor School, Ella and the other children are taught how to email and use Skype using their communication aids. I see the internet as a door that Ella can step through to access the world.”
With your donations we can support more families like Ella and Kim’s and help change their lives for the better.
Thank you.
