Supporting independence

“The new wet room has made a real difference to the service. It is a lot easier for all of us, and the residents really like the convenience and extra dignity it gives them.” Elaine, service manager

Thanks to the generous support of the Sir Tom Cowie Charitable Trust, we were able to build a new wet-room for service users at Laverneo, a purpose-built bungalow for four adults in Sunderland.

This improves the living environment at the service, and enable the residents, all of whom have cerebral palsy and associated impairments, to receive better support for their day-to-day needs.

With the help of the Sir Tom Cowie Charitable Trust donation we have been able to provide a clear and direct benefit for the people who live at Laverneo.

At Laverneo, service users are supported to work towards their goals, to make choices and decisions about their own lives, from decoration of their rooms to doing their own shopping. Each service user has their own room, decorated as he or she wishes, and there is a shared lounge, kitchen and dining-room.

Staff at the bungalow work hard to ensure that each service user can participate fully in activities that interest them, and regularly arrange taster sessions, so that new activities can be experienced with the aim of widening horizons and opening up new opportunities.
