Charles's story

Thanks to your support, Scope Response is there for Charles and Fiona.

"My name’s Karin and I’m a Scope Response worker. Scope Response is a support service for disabled people and their families, offering invaluable emotional and practical support when children are first diagnosed with cerebral palsy. We’re the only dedicated team able to do this in the UK – the one place families can turn at what can be a lonely and anxious time in their lives. And we’re only able to be there thanks to your ongoing support.

"In the last year alone, over 2,800 people contacted us every month and that number is growing all the time. I’ve been working with Charles and his family for the last 18 months, and their story highlights just how vital Scope Response is.

"Fiona was referred to me following her first phone call to Scope Response. I went to visit her within days, offering emotional support and expert advice on cerebral palsy when no one else could. We’re the only organisation with such a high level of expertise in this area, and I sat with her for two hours, listening to her concerns.

"I was able to give her leaflets, including Scope’s Parent Information Pack, which has been specially developed to answer the questions every parent has in this situation. And most crucially, I was able to explain cerebral palsy, and what it meant for Charles’s future, in a way she could understand. Where the doctors only saw a medical condition, I saw a fantastic little boy with his whole life ahead of him. No one else had offered her this support, but ever since then I’ve continued to be there whenever she’s needed me.

"I’ve written letters to help ensure Charles gets the best education to suit his needs. And whatever’s going on, whatever decisions she needs to make for him, Fiona knows she can call me anytime. Thanks to Scope Response, she now sees that Charles can and will fulfil his potential."
