Chris's story

Chris, 23, is a graduate from London Metropolitan University. He works as a volunteer with the Digital Team in the Communications and Marketing Department at our Market Road office in North London.

Tell us about yourself

I am from Penge in South East London. I studied Law at London Metropolitan University and graduated with little work experience. Struggling to find paid employment, I turned to volunteering to build the experience I need to progress. Fortunately, I was offered a voluntary role with the Digital Team at Scope. Some of my responsibilities have been subtitling video content, website maintenance and some legal issues regarding the website.

What do you enjoy most about the work?

The people that I have worked with at Scope are very friendly and supportive. I immediately felt like a member of the team and that I was doing my part for Scope. I can always feel proud of what I have done and what Scope can do to make a difference.

What has Scope enabled you to do?

Scope has increased my self-confidence and has given me the opportunity to learn new skills. Within a short time of being at Scope, I was given my own section of the site to create - a quite daunting task as this was my first project using the content management system. Having such supportive people around me enabled me to feel confident that I could complete the task. The positive comments on completion gave me a huge boost in self-belief. Scope has also allowed me to utilise the skills I gained from my degree by involving me in legal issues surrounding digital marketing, allowing me to improve on them. Examples where these skills were used are completing research on Data Protection and the controversial EU Internet Cookies legislation.

What’s the best part of your Scope experience?

The best part of my Scope experience has to be being part of such a great organisation. I have gained many new skills and a great deal of valuable experience. The ‘feel good’ factor that I get after completing a project is a bonus. I have had such a great experience at Scope that I am now volunteering within their Legacies Team. Scope has given me a large experience boost when applying for work and I will always remember it.
