Local groups in Central and East England
Local groups vary in size, activities and the services provided. Some are small with limited funds whilst others are large organisations with paid employees. You can contact any of them through Scope Response.
Bedford & District CP Society
Bedford & District CP Society provides a range of services to people of all ages with cerebral palsy and associated disabilities including information, support, helpline and playschemes. The society also offers activity clubs, carers support groups, voluntary opportunities and grants to individuals.
Cere-Pal
Cere-Pal is a local group of volunteers, parents and friends who are working
with people with cerebral palsy in and around the Peterborough area.
It will consider grants towards the purchase of PCs and software,
provide physiotherapy at home, wheelchairs, walkers and other
equipment and offer advice and support to families, friends and
people with cerebral palsy.

Chips provides integrated playschemes for disabled children and their siblings. It currently runs playschemes in the areas covered by East Herts and Broxbourne Councils.
East Herts CP Support
Group
This group covers East Herts area and is made up of mostly parents, with
some adults with cerebral palsy. It did undertake fundraising to give
grants to families with a member with cerebral palsy, but now has few
committee members who are able to do this.

Families InFocus (Essex) is a parent-led group based in Chelmsford. It
provides a range of services to parents/carers and families of
children with special needs across the spectrum of disabilities and
focuses on the emotional needs of the carers.
Gateopener - www.gateopener.org.uk
Gateopener provides a free information service to people who are disabled or have additional needs, their carers and relatives, also to professionals working in this field, throughout Suffolk and East Cambridgeshire. We have access to databases listing thousands of national and local organisations and will address every enquiry individually.
InterAct Chelmsford Limited - www.interact.org.uk
InterAct was set up in 1991 and incorporated as a charity in 1995. It has a
trading arm (InterAct Projects Ltd). There are 30 staff and over 100
volunteers across the InterAct 'group'. The aim of the group is to
initiate and develop projects to assist people with learning
disabilities or recovering from mental illness to participate in
society, primarily through meaningful work.
Norfolk & Norwich Scope Association (NANSA) www.nansa.org.uk
NANSA is an independent local voluntary organisation, which offers a range
of services, information and support for Norfolk people of all ages
with cerebral palsy and associated disabilities, their families and
carers. It runs an Adult Resource Centre, a Family Resource Centre
which offers School for Parents, Find-a-Link and Parent-Link.
Parasol
Parasol provides opportunities for children and young people (5-18 years)
with physical and learning disabilities in play and leisure
activities alongside their peers, and where possible, in their local
communities. Parasol also runs its own inclusive play, leisure, arts
and social activities. These include girls and boys groups, a
siblings group and a dance company called 'Making Trax'. Parasol
covers Oxford city only.
Scope in Colchester & Tendring
This group operates from the Castlegate Centre, which is situated in the
heart of Colchester. The objectives of the group are to support
people with cerebral palsy and the centre has become a platform for
associated activities, such as education and scouting, across a range
of ages. The services provided are a day centre for 19-40 age group,
40+ club, Face to Face for parents of children with disabilities,
Summer Playscheme and a music club.

Scope Northamptonshire is based in Northampton and has been established
for over 40 years. Services include outings, events, information and
support.
SNAP (Special Needs and Parents) - www.snapcharity.org
SNAP is an Essex-based support group for parents of children and young
people with any special need or disability. Services include a helpline,
parent and pre-school children groups, specialist library, multi-sensory
room IT suite, specialist talks, training courses, children's sports
activities, sibling support, music and drama therapy, website and a
directory of useful contacts.
Starscope (St Albans & Region)
Formed in 1954 as St Albans & District Spastics Society is a support
group for people with cerebral palsy, their families and carers and
provides grants up to £500 for equipment and other expenses due
to disability.
Stepping Stones
Stepping Stones runs a children's playgroup in Aylesbury three days a week,
welcoming children with any disability and their parents. Though the
playgroup, the parents also offer support to one another.

The aim of the Sunflower Trust in Southend is to raise awareness of
special needs within the community. It provides financial support to
local children with special needs and as well as general information
attempting to assist the client at all times.
The PACE Centre - www.thepacecentre.org
The group was founded in Buckinghamshire in 1990 as a partnership between
parents and professionals. In 1998 it was registered as a special
school and operates from a modern purpose-built property adjacent to
mainstream schools. The aims of the group is to provide an education
for life through programmes which incorporate all daily living
activities and address the needs of the whole child.
Thurrock & District Cerebral Palsy Society
This group works for people with cerebral palsy and their carers in
Thurrock and Southwest Essex. It provides support and advice on a
wide range of subjects, has a conductive education-based group for
under 5s and a drop-in service four days a week.
