FAQs for new supporters

Why do you fundraise by coming to my home?

We believe that disabled people should have the same opportunities as everyone else in life. To make that happen we need your support. We love to tell stories about our work, and by visiting you at home we have an opportunity to tell you about some of the disabled people we support, enabling us to raise funds that we would struggle to find elsewhere.

Where are your face to face fundraisers currently working?

Find out where our fundraisers are currently working.

How can I verify the ID of your fundraisers?

We have a list of all of the fundraisers currently working for Scope, so if you have any concerns or you would just like to verify that the fundraiser you spoke to was genuine, please contact our Supporter Care team.

Are face to face fundraisers paid?

Yes, our fundraisers are paid. We would love volunteers to do this valuable work for us, but unfortunately this is not a feasible option. Our fundraisers work very hard all over the country and bring in a huge amount of income that we would struggle to find elsewhere. All types of fundraising incur a cost, but however much we spend we gain a substantial amount more back for our work with disabled children and adults.

How do I change my gift amount?

If you’d like to increase, reduce or change your type of support, please get in touch with our Supporter Care team who will be delighted to help.

Are my bank details safe?

Yes, we adhere to the Data Protection Act and we ensure that all of your personal data is properly safeguarded.

How do I complain about a Scope fundraiser?

If you have a complaint about a fundraiser you have spoken to, or telephone calls you have been receiving, or you have any other concerns, please contact our Supporter Care team.

How else can I support Scope's work?

Whether you have energy, expertise, time or donations, your support is at the heart of what we do. There are loads of ways to get involved. If you’re looking for a challenge then perhaps running a marathon or climbing a mountain is for you. Your expertise and time could help us run our charity shops, improve our services and achieve our vision. Or if you can support us with a donation to our shops, a one-off gift or a monthly Direct Debit, your efforts can help us make amazing things possible. To discuss any of these, please contact our Supporter Care team.

Where do I send postal donations?

You can send a cheque, postal order or charity voucher made payable to Scope to: Supporter Care, Scope, 6 Market Road, London, N7 9PW.

How do I contact someone about changing my details/address?

If you’d like us to change any details on your record, please just drop us an email, give us a call or write to us.

What is Gift Aid and am I eligible for it?

Gift Aid means that for every £1 you donate to us, we can claim an extra 25p back from the tax man at no extra cost to yourself. This is a brilliant way for you to support us if you can.

As long as you are a UK tax payer, currently paying income tax or capital gains tax that is equal to or greater than the tax deducted from your donations, we can reclaim the tax you have paid on any donation made to us over the past four years, and any donations you make to us in the future. If you have only just started paying tax, then we can make sure that we only claim on your donations from the date of your declaration.

Where is my money going?

Campaigns - we work with disabled people on the issues that are most important to them and aim to raise awareness, change attitudes and influence government policy.
Help and information - we support disabled people and their families through practical information and support, particularly at the time of diagnosis and in a disabled child’s early years.
Services - we offer a range of services for disabled children and adults, which are primarily focused on those whose complex support needs are not met elsewhere.

How much of my pound goes to helping disabled people?

For every £1 we receive (excluding retail):

  • 88p goes directly to our work with disabled people
  • 4p goes towards our governance and running costs
  • 8p is invested to generate further income

How do I leave a legacy or in memory gift?

We are always extremely grateful when supporters decide to leave a gift to us in their will, and these donations are vital to our work. If you are interested in considering Scope in this special way, please find out more about leaving a gift in your will.

Donating in memory of a loved one is also a very thoughtful way to support us, and you can find out more about how to leave a gift in memory.

How do I make an online donation?

Simply visit www.scope.org.uk/donate where you can make a secure single donation or sign up to a regular gift by Direct Debit.

Why is Scope calling me?

Your support means a lot to us, so every so often we like to get in touch to give you an update, share a new story or see if you’d like to get involved in the work we do in other ways. If you’d rather not hear from us, simply let our Supporter Care team know and we won’t call you any more, but we will always be at the other end of the phone if you want to call us.

Why haven’t I heard from you for a while?

It could be that we have an incorrect address or email for you. If you would like to check please give us a call. You can also sign up for our e-newsletters here to receive regular updates about our work and where your donations are going.

How do I stop receiving appeals/comms?

We really appreciate it when you tell us what you would and wouldn’t like to receive from us. It  help us to reach more people who can support our work in this way and provide a better experience for you. Please get in touch with us and we’ll be happy to help.
