Social care matters. Without it, millions of people struggle to do the basic things in life – like getting out of bed, making a sandwich, or running a bath. At the moment, we know that lots of disabled people aren’t getting the support they need. Many of them have been left stuck in the house and feeling isolated.
Family members, friends and colleagues are having to step in to offer the support that councils can’t afford to provide. They work as carers and they are having to manage alone. Without support, they are feeling anxious and depressed.
The Government has said that changes are coming. We need to make sure that we don’t waste this once-in-a-lifetime chance to create a system that really works for disabled people.
There should be a system where everyone gets the care they need. Also, it should cover:
- widely available support for disabled people for getting out of their home and participating in the community
- making sure disabled people have choice and control over every part of their lives
Over the coming months, Scope will be campaigning hard alongside other charities to realise this vision.
