Everything is illuminated...

Just been working with Suzanne Little, a teacher from Scope's Meldreth Manor School on a feature for SEN magazine about ultra violet light and how it enhances the experience of creating art for young people with complex support needs.

The special effects of UV light make colours stand out more vibrantly. This heightened awareness increases participation among these young people who become more involved in making their own choices like choosing their favourite colours - often just by moving their eyes.

The article tells the story of Charlie, a 17-year-old girl who has cerebral palsy and is visually impaired. She experiences a real sense of wonder gazing at paints under UV light - which from her reaction seem to have a magical quality - as she selects her favourite colours of pink and yellow.

It's made me think about how I view the world and how everything is illuminated - if we look close enough.

It's also made me reflect again on the valuable work that goes on in Scope's schools and services and of the tremendous value of seemingly simple activities like art which can be so important for the autonomy and well being of someone like Charlie.
