Scope welcomes news that C4 wins rights to 2016 Paralympics

9 February 2013

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has awarded Channel 4 the rights to broadcast the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games as well as the Sochi 2014 Winter Paralympic Games. Scope welcomes the news.

Richard Hawkes, Chief Executive of the disability charity Scope said:

“This is good news for the profile of the Paralympics and good news for disabled people.

“The 2012 Paralympics were a breakthrough moment in attitudes to disability – thanks in no small part to C4’s coverage.

“But you don't change the way people think and act in a fortnight. There’s a long way to go.

“Disabled people tell us greater visibility and more open discussion make a real difference.

“With programmes like the Last Leg, Channel 4 is leading the way when it comes to getting disabled talent into the mainstream.

“We look forward to more great sport between now and 2016. But we also look forward to more TV that challenges the way we think about disability.”
