Lifestyles Day Service in Frodsham opens beauty salon!

Health and wellbeing

At Scope’s Lifestyles service in Frodsham, disabled people learn and gain new skills. Recently, Lifestyles had a trial Health and Wellbeing session, which proved a great success with customers so Lifestyles got together with its sister day service in Chester to discuss the best way to go about gaining the skills and qualifications to take this idea onto the next level.

Access to beauty salons

The Lifestyles group surveyed salons in the local area, Halton and Frodsham, to see whether they are accessible for everyone to use. They found some difficulties, for example steps into the salon and not enough adequate space within the salon and the attitudes of some to disabled people.

Beauty therapy

Scope got funding from West Cheshire College so that Scope support worker Deirdre Gelling could attain NVQ level 2 Beauty Therapy, along with colleague Beverley Hannon. This enabled Lifestyles to extend Beauty Therapy and Health and Wellbeing sessions to many more people.

Makeover

The Lifestyles team and customers all pulled together to paint and adapt a room to create a modern and relaxing setting. They purchased a mobile hoist and an occupational beauty therapy bed to suit the customers’ individual needs. The room was designed to help the individual relax and enjoy whatever treatment they have chosen.

Beverley Hannon, support worker and beauty therapist at the salon, said: "The salon is an excellent environment for people to come along and enjoy a wide range of beauty treatments at their own leisure, no matter what range of disability people. We decided to set the salon up at the Frodsham day service, due to the high demand for the door-to-door beauty therapy, not only for ladies but for gents, too. It also gives the chance to meet new people in friendly environment. I really hope this helps to encourage new people to come along and visit us."

Treatments

Trained staff consult customers to find out if they have any allergies and what range of movement they have, before any treatment starts.

A customer of the salon, Susan Greenwood, said: "I have cerebral palsy, which means I have very little use of my arms and legs but I don't let this stop me and I take pride in my appearance, which is why I love the salon so much."

The beauty salon has proven to be a great success, and is now opening to the public on Tuesday 29 March 2011.
