Scope comment on human rights loophole in residential care
22 June 2007
Scope is very concerned at yesterday’s Law Lords judgement that the Human Rights Act does not apply to private care homes.
Whether a service is owned and/or run by a local authority or private provider, people’s human rights need and deserve the full protection of the law.
Everyone who provides services to older and disabled people needs to fully embrace the Human Rights agenda if we are to ensure dignity, choice and control for those who use them.
Scope would like to see the Government take urgent action to amend legislation to ensure that disabled and older people have equal rights, dignity and protection from abuse regardless of who provides their services.
