Scope patron Richard Bradbury CBE wins philanthropy award
7 February 2013
Scope patron Richard Bradbury CBE has been awarded a Beacon Fellowship Award for Pioneering Philanthropy.
Beacon Awards are given to recognise effective philanthropic giving. As a keen supporter of Scope, Richard’s specific award was given in part because of his huge support in setting up a Scope-supported living service in Hitchin, Hertfordshire. Ashurst is home to five disabled young adults with complex needs.
Richard worked with Scope to develop a layered financing structure for the project which meant that we were able to secure all the funding for the project within six months. The award judges felt that this met the award criteria by demonstrating an original approach in ‘meeting a social, environmental or charitable cause through giving’. The Award was presented to Richard at a evening ceremony in London’s Mansion House on 6 February 2013.
A spokesperson for the Awards said, “We see many extraordinary examples of philanthropy at Beacon, and it is both humbling and uplifting to learn of the difference that effective giving can make in changing lives for the better. We hope that others will be inspired and encouraged to make their own contribution through the great stories of giving that emerge through the Beacon Fellowship.”
Since the first Beacon Awards ceremony, in 2003, more than 70 individuals have been honoured as Beacon Fellows in recognition of their exceptional contribution to charitable and social causes. The organisers hope that the Awards create wider awareness of philanthropy and provide inspiration for others to follow.
