Scope CEO responds to Councillor's resignation

Councillor Collin Brewer, an independent member of Cornwall Council, is reported to have said "Disabled children cost the council too much money and should be put down." 

He has resigned, and in response Richard Hawkes, chief executive of the disability charity Scope, said:

“Elected officials have a duty to consider and represent all of their constituents to the best of their abilities and that includes disabled people.

“The Councillor’s ill-judged and insensitive statement demonstrated that he was clearly not fit for office and we believe he has made the right decision in stepping down.

“Times are extremely tough at the moment for thousands of families with disabled children who are struggling to get the most basic support.

“Councillors should be making sure councils are improving the lives of disabled children, not hindering them or questioning their very existence.”
