Scope statement on DRC's Disability Agenda
14 February 2007
Commenting on the Disability Rights Commission's Disability Agenda launched today, Andy Rickell, Executive Director, Diversity, Politics and Planning, said:
"Scope welcomes the DRC's Disability Agenda, which sets out clearly the key challenges for policy makers on disability over the next decade.
"We support its call to the Government to invest in and reform key public services, in particular our social care system, which has left many disabled families without the practical, financial and emotional support they desperately need. Many of these services are currently under threat because of cutbacks to local authority budgets this year.
"We are also pleased that promoting a culture of equality and human rights, increasing participation for disabled people and the right to independent living are high on the DRC's agenda - which are all key priorities for Scope.
"The DRC has achieved a great deal over the last seven years to significantly improve the lives of disabled people and will leave behind a powerful legacy. It is vital that disabled people continue to have a strong voice in the DRC's successor body - the Commission of Equality and Human Rights (CEHR) - and that their lived experiences are reflected in its work on disability."
