Scope statement regarding European Court ruling on workplace discrimination against carers
18 July 2008
Scope issued a statement regarding the European Court of Justice landmark ruling in the case involving Sharon Coleman who was foced to resign as a legal secretary amid claims that she suffered `discrimination by association’ in breach of EU rules.
Welcoming the European Court of Justice ruling, Ruth Scott, Head of Policy at disability charity Scope, said:
“Scope is aware of many situations where relatives of disabled people have been discriminated against in the workplace because of their caring responsibilities.
“We have campaigned for `discrimination by association’ to be included specifically within the Disability Discrimination Act. We hope this ruling will provide an incentive to the Government to clarify domestic law on this issue through the forthcoming Equality Bill.”
