Clare Thomas MBE

Clare is a qualified social worker who has spent most of her career in the charitable and public sectors.

She has over 25 years’ experience working in trusts and foundations and has spent the last 17 years running one of the largest UK foundations, City Bridge Trust. This foundation has been a major funder of Scope and Clare has been very involved in supporting Scope on its transformational journey. City Bridge is a key funder of disability rights’ organisations and recently, under Clare’s leadership, the trust launched a £20 million social investment fund placing the trust in the vanguard of new ways resourcing social enterprise and not for profit organisations.

Clare, as a former chair of the Association of Charitable Foundations, has extensive contacts with leading charitable and public funders. She was responsible for a new initiative City Philanthropy-A Wealth of Opportunity which is encouraging new ways of giving amongst the business community in the City.

As well as first rate network of contacts, Clare has extensive experience of governance both as a chair and as a board member in a range of charitable organisations. She understands the roles and responsibilities of trusteeship as well as charity regulation and the business and funding challenges facing voluntary organisations.
