Play activity 6 - texture massage

This activity develops discovery and learning about the body, exploring and experimenting, making choices and communicating preferences, making connections with the world.

What’s in the box?

  • Hessian
  • Man-made fibre
  • Velvet
  • Leather
  • Woollen material
  • Lotion or oil may also be used for the massage, but be aware of possible allergies

Activities

  • In a warm environment, undress the child to their underwear (not necessary – it just allows you to use more of their body).
  • Make sure that you are comfortable – lay the child in front of you in a comfortable position. Keep a blanket handy to keep them warm.
  • Use the different textures, draping them over each part of the child’s body.
  • Use slow movements, giving them the opportunity to explore the materials if they choose to.

Moving on

  • Introduce a piece of favourite music or song.
  • Use different items, for example, feathers (be aware of allergies), brushes, velvet, pebbles, and so on.
  • If the child is able to tolerate it, try applying a little more pressure – being careful not to press too hard.

Observation and assessment

  • If the child shows discomfort or dislikes what is being done – stop.
  • Introduce different textures and materials. Note down responses.
  • Make sure the child does not get cold during the session. Finish each piece of music with a gentle rub down with a blanket.
  • This activity can be done individually or within a group situation.
  • Protect yourself and the child by having another member of staff within the group.

Inclusion guide

  • Do the activity as a whole group – children can be paired up, trying out the materials on each other – just involving hands and feet.
  • Encourage children to find other textures to try.
  • Make music of different rhythms and tempo to use during the massage session.
